This event was hosted by Toray Industries, Inc. and Specialty Materials and organized by the SAMPE Boston Chapter!
As part of this event, industry members traveled to UMass Lowell to see some of the Francis College of Engineering at UMass Lowell labs on campus! This included the Dynamic Characterization Lab, The Baseball Research Center, The Fabric Discovery Center, and the plastics engineering manufacturing labs. We love to show the capabilities of our university as well as all the hard work of our students and researchers.
This was followed by an event at The Establishment to network and listen to the three technical talks! Thank you to the presenters from Specialty Materials, Lockheed Martin/Sikorsky, and Communications & Power Industries (CPI)/Radant Technologies, Inc. for sharing your company’s work with our students!!

This event includes a student research poster competition. Eight of our student members competed along with student members of our sister student chapers and our own Kevin Cloherty won first place!

Some of our students, Kevin Cloherty, Drupad Kadiyala Bhavani, Jagadeesh Reddy, Anthony Mosto, and Kay Wojtowicz gave a presentation at the first advising board meeting and ice cream social for the University of Massachusetts Lowell Center for Sports Engineering and Performance! Our student presented on the Hawk-tronaut Pickleball Paddle V1 which was created for the SAMPE 2026 northeast conference!
While none of the manufacturing team are involved in the sports engineering program, they were proud to show how they approached this sports engineering problem from a mechanics perspective.
